How Long Do Lip Fillers Last? Results, Timeline, and What to Expect | Eternal Wellness
Lip fillers in Traverse City last 6 to 12 months on average, but the timeline depends on the product, your anatomy, and how you care for them. Brittnee Keyes, FNP-C explains everything.

Lip fillers are one of the most requested injectable treatments at Eternal Wellness, and one of the most common questions I hear at consultations is a simple one: how long will this actually last?
The honest answer is that it depends. Most patients see results that hold well for 6 to 12 months, but the specific product used, your individual anatomy, your lifestyle, and how you care for your lips afterward all influence where in that range you land. Some patients comfortably go 12 to 18 months. Others prefer to top up at 6 months before noticing significant fading.
Here is the complete picture, from how long each product lasts to what the first two weeks look like and how to make your results go as far as possible.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last by Product?
Not all lip fillers behave the same way. At Eternal Wellness in Traverse City, we use three primary products for lip augmentation, each with a distinct texture, longevity, and best use case.
| Product | Typical Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Juvederm Volbella XC | Up to 12 months | Subtle volume, perioral lines, first-time patients |
| Juvederm Ultra XC | 6 to 12 months | Fuller volume, more dramatic enhancement |
| Restylane Kysse | Up to 12 months | Natural movement, lip definition, soft result |
| Restylane Silk | 6 to 9 months | Fine perioral lines, very subtle lip refinement |
Juvederm Volbella XC
Volbella is a soft, smooth gel designed specifically for lip augmentation and the fine lines around the mouth. Its lighter consistency integrates gently into lip tissue, producing a subtle, hydrated enhancement rather than dramatic volume. It is my go-to recommendation for first-time lip filler patients and for anyone who prefers a very natural result. Clinical data supports results lasting up to 12 months, making it one of the longer-lasting options for lips.
Juvederm Ultra XC
Ultra XC has a firmer consistency and delivers more noticeable volume than Volbella. Patients who want a fuller, more defined lip and are comfortable with a more visible change typically prefer this product. It lasts 6 to 12 months in most patients, with duration influenced by the volume injected and the patient's metabolism. It also contains lidocaine, making the treatment more comfortable.
Restylane Kysse
Restylane Kysse is formulated specifically for lip augmentation using Galderma's OBT technology, which allows the gel to move naturally with the lips rather than feeling stiff. A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that Kysse results were maintained at 12 months post-treatment with high patient satisfaction scores. It is an excellent option for patients who want definition and natural movement.
The product I recommend for your lips depends on your anatomy, your baseline lip volume, and your aesthetic goals. There is no universally best product. The right choice is the one that fits you specifically, which is why a consultation before treatment matters.
What Does the Lip Filler Swelling Timeline Look Like?
One of the most important things to understand before your appointment is that what your lips look like for the first week is not what they will look like at the end. Swelling is a normal part of the healing process, and understanding the day-by-day progression prevents unnecessary worry and helps you plan around important events.
Day 1 to 2: Peak Swelling
Your lips will be noticeably more swollen immediately after treatment and will often appear larger than you intended. This is normal and expected. Some mild bruising at injection sites may also be visible. The lips may feel tender or firm to the touch. Avoid making judgments about your final result at this stage.
Day 3 to 4: Swelling Begins to Subside
The most dramatic swelling typically begins to resolve around day 3. You will notice the lips settling and softening. Some patients find that asymmetry appears at this stage as different areas swell and deflate at slightly different rates. This is also temporary.
Day 5 to 7: Significant Improvement
By the end of the first week, most of the swelling has resolved and the lips are approaching their true post-treatment appearance. Bruising, if present, is usually fading by this point. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal social activities by day 5 to 7.
Week 2: Final Result
At approximately two weeks, the filler has fully integrated into the lip tissue and the swelling has completely resolved. This is when you can accurately assess your results. Some patients notice the lips look slightly less full at two weeks than they hoped, which is actually normal because the post-procedure swelling created a temporary impression of more volume. This is worth knowing in advance.
If you have an important event, schedule your lip filler appointment at least 2 weeks before it. This gives swelling and any bruising time to completely resolve and lets you see and appreciate your actual results before the event.
What Affects How Long Lip Fillers Last?
Several factors influence where individual patients land in the 6 to 12 month range:
- Metabolism: patients with faster metabolisms tend to break down hyaluronic acid more quickly. This explains why some patients feel the filler fading at 5 to 6 months while others comfortably reach 12 months or beyond
- Exercise frequency: high-intensity exercise increases metabolic rate and blood circulation, both of which can accelerate HA breakdown. Very frequent athletes may notice shorter duration than sedentary patients
- Sun exposure: UV radiation accelerates the breakdown of hyaluronic acid in tissue. Consistent daily SPF and minimizing direct sun exposure to the lips help preserve results
- Smoking: smoking accelerates collagen degradation and tissue breakdown, which can shorten filler duration and also affects the appearance of the lip border over time
- Volume injected: patients who receive more volume per session often notice results lasting longer, as there is more material for the body to break down before the lips return to their natural state
- Treatment history: patients who have maintained regular lip filler appointments over years often find results lasting progressively longer. Cumulative treatment has a mild collagen-stimulating effect in the perioral tissue

Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Do and What to Avoid
What you do in the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment meaningfully influences both your immediate comfort and your long-term results.
For the First 24 Hours
- Apply a clean, cool compress gently to lips for 10 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Do not apply ice directly
- Sleep with your head elevated to minimize overnight swelling buildup
- Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the lips
- Avoid alcohol, which increases bruising and swelling
- Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless medically necessary
- Eat soft foods and avoid stretching the lips wide
For the First Week
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
- Avoid facials, facial massage, or any pressure on the lips
- Avoid extreme heat: saunas, steam rooms, and very hot beverages
- Apply SPF lip balm when outdoors
- Stay well hydrated. Hyaluronic acid binds water, and good hydration supports the filler's performance
Ongoing
- Daily SPF on the lips and perioral area extends results and protects the skin
- Staying well hydrated supports HA performance
- Avoiding smoking preserves both the filler and the quality of the perioral skin
How Often Should You Get Lip Filler Touch-Ups?
Most patients settle into one of two patterns:
- Annual maintenance: one appointment per year to top up results before significant fading occurs. This is the most common schedule for patients using Volbella, Kysse, or any product with strong 12-month data
- Twice yearly: some patients prefer to maintain at 6 months, either because their metabolism is faster, they use Ultra XC for more volume, or they simply prefer the look at 6 months rather than waiting until the 10 to 12 month point when more fading has occurred
There is no medical benefit to spacing appointments further apart. Topping up before the filler has completely dissolved tends to be more comfortable and requires less product to restore the desired result, because there is still some residual filler present. Waiting until lips have fully returned to baseline requires essentially starting from scratch.

Lip Filler vs Lip Flip: Which Lasts Longer?
The lip flip is a different treatment that uses a small amount of neurotoxin (Botox or Dysport) injected into the orbicularis oris muscle above the upper lip. It causes the lip to gently relax and roll outward, creating the appearance of a fuller upper lip without adding volume. It is an excellent option for patients who want shape refinement rather than volume.
The trade-off is duration. Neurotoxin in the lip flip lasts only 6 to 8 weeks, significantly shorter than any HA filler. This is because the lips are highly mobile, and the constant movement accelerates neurotoxin metabolism in this area. It also requires a very conservative dose to preserve natural lip function and speech.
Some patients use the lip flip and lip filler together: the filler adds volume and the lip flip refines shape. In this case, the filler drives the duration of the overall treatment, and the lip flip is touched up every 6 to 8 weeks if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do lip fillers last the first time?
First-time lip filler patients typically see results lasting 6 to 9 months, sometimes up to 12 months depending on the product used. The lips tend to absorb the initial treatment somewhat faster because there is no pre-existing filler present. Patients who maintain regular appointments often find subsequent results lasting progressively longer as cumulative treatment mildly supports the perioral tissue over time.
Do lip fillers hurt?
Lip filler injections involve some discomfort, but the experience is manageable for most patients. All of our lip filler products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic mixed into the gel that reduces discomfort as the treatment proceeds. A topical numbing cream is also applied before treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild pinch with each injection that subsides quickly.
Can lip fillers be dissolved?
Yes. All of the hyaluronic acid lip fillers we use at Eternal Wellness, including Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Ultra XC, and Restylane Kysse, can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you are unhappy with your results for any reason, or if a complication arises, we have the capability to safely and effectively reverse the filler. This reversibility is one of the key advantages of HA-based fillers over other filler types.
What happens when lip fillers wear off?
When lip filler naturally degrades, the lips gradually return to their pre-treatment appearance. The filler does not cause the lips to look worse than before or stretch the tissue. There is no deflated or saggy appearance associated with HA filler wearing off naturally. Your lips simply return to baseline over the course of several weeks as the remaining product is metabolized.
How much do lip fillers cost at Eternal Wellness?
Lip injections at Eternal Wellness in Traverse City typically range from $500 to $800 per syringe, depending on the specific product selected. Most patients achieve their desired result with one syringe per session, though some choose two syringes for a more dramatic enhancement. Contact our office or visit our lip injections page for current pricing details.
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Swelling after lip filler peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours and typically resolves significantly by day 5 to 7. Final results are visible at approximately two weeks when the filler has fully integrated into the lip tissue. Some very mild puffiness may persist through the first week, particularly in the morning. Cold compresses in the first 24 hours and staying well hydrated help minimize swelling duration.
